WHISTLER, British Columbia (CP) -- The Ironmen Hockey Club is pleased to announce the 2003 recipient of the Lester B. Pearson Award is Rob Nikkel.

The Lester B. Pearson Award is the annual award presented to the Ironmen Hockey Club player who is judged by his teammates to be the most valuable player in the Whistler Summit Series Hockey Tournament. The award is named after the late, Lester B. Pearson, former Prime Minister of Canada.

Nikkel had an excellent three game tournament he played the opening game partnered on defense with his father Norm. In game two he was moved to centre where he supplied the game-winning goal in a 4-2 win over Tiki Bob's Bombers. In the final game of the tournament Nikkel was in on three of the four Ironmen goals scoring a goal and adding two assists.

Ironmen Invade Whistler
June 8, 2003

WHISTLER, British Columbia (CP) -- The Ironmen Hockey Club participated in their second straight Whistler Summit Series Hockey Tournament during the first weekend of June 2003. Although the team did not qualify for the medal round many positives can be taken away from this year's tournament. The Ironmen got their first tournament victory with a 4-2 win over Tiki Bob's Bombers on Saturday, June 7th. Jason Radford and Rob Nikkel both had strong tournaments with honorable mention going to Edward Kouwenhoven, Shane Jack and Mark Steele. The Ironmen finished the tournament with one win and two losses.

Off the ice the members of the team spent more time together as a group than one year ago. Whether it was enjoying some beverages in a teammates room, eating meals together, lounging by the pool and hot tub or taking in the Whistler nightlife. The time the players spent together away from the rink can only be a positive in terms of developing an even stronger team bond.
